Daniel, a cat with a near-record 26 toes, has come to the rescue of the animal shelter which gave him a new home. He has two extra toes on each paw, due to a genetic mutation called polydactylism.

Daniel was found at a shelter by Amy Rowell, of the Milwaukee Animal Rescue Centre, when she went to collect another cat. As she bent down to a cage, Daniel stuck his paw out.

“He was very clearly saying ‘I need to be rescued’,” she said. Now he is helping to raise $120,000 (£76,000) for a new home after the rent for the shelter’s premises doubled. “I’ve always been a firm believer that everything happens for a reason,” said Ms Rowell.

Daniel’s toe count is two short of the Guinness World Records entry.
