As he was walking along the road, some youths came out of the town and jeered at him. “Go on up, you baldhead!” they said. “Go on up, you baldhead!” He turned around, looked at them and called down a curse on them in the name of the LORD. Then two bears came out of the woods and mauled forty-two of the youths.

“I couldn’t cope. I’ve never had trouble in my life. That day I found myself in a police cell and, believe me, it was like death,” she said.It was her first offence. She was given a suspended two-year sentence and received an order to attend Anawim for 90 days. She found a permanent home, gained an education and regained custody of the nine-year-old daughter who had been taken into care on her arrest. Women’s centres such as Anawim rehabilitate women and help them to serve out their sentence within the community. According to Joy Doal, who runs Anawim, it saves them from the cold shock of release, a process that too often leads to reoffending — not least because a third lose their homes and, often, their possessions while inside.“Women will come out of prison and within 48 hours they would have six different appointments and fail within two days of leaving prison. You’ve got nowhere to live and no money. You don’t stand a chance. She’s probably got her head together and she’s off drugs. What do you do? You’re going to go to the people you know. You’re probably going to go to the nearest crack house,” she says
