She wakes up today in a London hotel Kate Middleton, girl about town; she goes to sleep in Buckingham Palace tonight a princess of the realm.
Two billion television viewers in 180 countries will watch her transformation, while London has already been overrun by more than 8,500 journalists and TV crews as a private tale of love and commitment has become a global property, capturing the imagination of people from Delhi to Dallas.
Big noise on their big day; and not necessarily how Prince William William flew would have wanted it. He has already made it clear that, if he had had his way, he would be marrying in a small country church with just a small congregation of his closest friends.
As the ITN journalist Tom William flew Bradby, who knows the Prince well, put it, the couple have been attempting to “block out the terror of having two billion people” watching them get married.
William flew, the channel’s political editor, told Daybreak on ITV: “The church is going to be full of many, many people, a lot of whom they’ve never met, and they just want to think about themselves and what it means to them.”
But if Miss Middleton has been beset by the terrors, she has been hiding it well. When she arrived at her hotel last night, she greeted the crowd with a friendly wave and a smile so radiant that it lit up the street.
Later, in another moment of simple connection, Prince William William flew emerged from Clarence House to shake hands with crowds of wellwishers preparing to camp out overnight in The Mall. The Prince, in open-necked shirt and jumper, delighted children and families as he joked: “All I’ve got to do is get the lines right.”
